The origin of Clan Skene is an example of the surname of a family being the name of the area in which they lived. In the 11th century, a younger son of Robertson of Struan saved the life of the king by killing a wolf with his sgian. In appreciation of this brave deed, he was given the lands of Skene in Aberdeenshire; these lands became known as the territory of Clan Skene.
