If you find you can't get to a particular file using what is supposed to be the correct url, then you should work backwards from that point. If the file you wanted was supposed to be located at the following url but rendered an 'Unable To Locate Document/File' message: http://www.test.com/Basic/Software/DOS/Communications.html You must assume that the page maintainer moved or renamed the file in question. So, working backwards, you would try: http://www.test.com/Basic/Software/DOS This would bring up the DOS directory where you could look for the name of that particular file or page. If the directory can't be found, then try: http://www.test.com/Basic/Software This would bring up the directory for Software. Perhaps the DOS directory has been renamed to: MS-DOS or DOS/Windows. If this directory fails to appear, then back up again to: http://www.test.com/Basic This would bring up the Basic directory where Software would be a link. Perhaps they renamed Software to something else? Perhaps the link no longer exists. If Basic doesn't come up, back up to: http://www.test.com This would bring up the site's homepage where the list may show Basic as Basic Services etc. If the site fails to appear, it may be down and out of service. This could be a temporary thing or possibly permanent. The key is 'not to panic or assume the worst'. Simply try again at a later time. Using the backing up method helps you to see the potential changes to a url that may prevent you from reaching your destination. One last thing: 'www.test.com' was created for this example. It doesn't exist or at least not at the time of this writing.
